Abstract

In the course of current developments in the power system, the need for better coordination of power grid and market operation arises. Hence, the authors propose an integrated grid and power market simulation ‘iGrims’, which offers optimal coordination. However, the modeling level of detail can vary in many aspects. By comparing a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) of high level of detail with an improved linear programming (LP-DC) and a simple linear programming (LP) of lower levels, a suitable level for modeling thermal power plants can be determined. Exemplary investigations for the IEEE 118-bus test system and 168 hours show that lowering the level of detail has a noticeable influence on various parameters. Herein, line loadings are affected significantly by up to 50%. Furthermore, total operational costs for power generation decrease by around 1.8%. Therefore, the MILP should be preferred for modeling thermal power plants within iGrims.
