Abstract

Electrical resistivity imaging approaches were integrated with hydrogeochemical and geological analysis to assess saltwater intrusion and aquifer condition in the Langat Basin. A major issue in water policy is groundwater preservation. Approaching this problem can be provided by comprehensive understanding of the aquifer systems. Geoelectrical surveying and modeling tools have been used to determine the thickness and resistivity of aquifer. In addition, geochemical analyses are used to describe the groundwater quality in the Langat Basin. Chemical analyses of groundwater samples collected from thirteen wells and 75 Wenner array resistivity surveys along five lines have been undertaken successfully. A Wenner array was selected because of its sensitivity in detecting vertical changes in subsurface resistivity. According to the resulting models, the aquifer depth varies from 10 to 25 m and the layer thickness changes from 10 to 44 m, respectively, from east to west across the study area. The useful information which is supplied in this research can be applied to improve a wider knowledge of groundwater quality in the area and their relationship with the local geology.
