Abstract

The design and realization of high speed (up to 20 Gbit/s) laser-modulator optical sources is reviewed. The different approaches devised for their monolithic integration are described, with particular emphasis on the identical active layer (IAL) scheme. Issues pertaining to optimized transmission on standard dispersive fiber are particularly discussed. Soliton pulse generation by harmonic modulation of these light sources is finally reported.
