The paper discusses the impact of the integrated broadband communications (IBC) technology on computer-integrated manufacturing. The emphasis is on the interfaces of enterprise applications and information systems. The related standards are briefly reviewed. An object-oriented architecture based on advanced user agents is proposed and two pilot implementations are described. The work is part of the DIMUN project (Distributed Manufacturing Using Existing and Developing Public Networks. RACE programme, part III, Application pilots, three-year project 1988–1990) in the RACE programme (R&D in Advanced Communications in Europe. A European Community programme focused on integrated broadband communications and the development of technology for introduction of commercial IBC services in 1995).
