Abstract

This paper demonstrates the importance of the integrated area development approach to rural development to both national and regional planning activities. Application of the approach is illustrated in an Indian context, where both a micro- and macro-orientation are called for, in the Bastar District of Madhya Pradesh. The study area is rich in natural resources, with outstanding development potential, yet unemployed and underemployed labour is abundant and per capita income is extremely low. Macro goals to reduce unemployment and raise incomes are not being met. Integrated area development using a micro approach is essential. It must include an expanded extension service, close co-ordination between different government agencies, a shift in government authority to the local level and a co-ordinating body to monitor the sequences and effects of the different programmes within area plans.
