Abstract

Sexual violence and alcohol use are critical and interrelated concerns for the US military. The current chapter advances the science and practice of sexual assault prevention for military service members by articulating a rationale for integrated alcohol use and sexual assault prevention for service members. In this chapter, integrated alcohol use and sexual assault prevention approaches are operationalized as interventions that include active alcohol use intervention administered in combination with sexual assault prevention programming. Strategies for addressing the ways in which alcohol use impacts sexual aggression, sexual victimization, and bystander intervention in prevention efforts are reviewed. Progress toward developing integrated alcohol use and sexual assault prevention approaches for civilian populations and military populations is also discussed.
