Abstract

1.1. Providers of life insurance coverage in Japan Life insurance coverage in Japan is provided by private life insurance companies, the Post Office Life Insurance Bureau of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, and various types of cooperative associations. At present, 30 private life insurers are authorized to do life insurance business in Japan, where 27 life insurers are domestic companies and the remaining three insurers are branch operations of foreign insurers. Among 27 domestic life insurers, foreign insurers have a stake in five companies, including two wholly-owned subsidiary companies. Sixteen life insurers out of 27 are mutual companies, while the remaining 11 life insurers are joint-stock companies, most of which were established rather recently.
