Abstract
This chapter discusses the development of South African insurance law. Topics covered include the early influence of English law, the formal introduction of English insurance law in 1879, the application and interpretation of the General Law Amendment Act, further development of the Anglo-South African insurance law, the repeal of the General Law Amendment Act in 1977, the Admiralty Jurisdiction Regulation Act of 1983, the Oudtshoorn Municipality decision in 1985, and the future of Roman-Dutch insurance law in South Africa.
