Abstract

In a reversal of its previous attitude, the committee agreed to let self-employed members of the Amish and certain other religious sects withdraw from the Social Security system and stop paying Social Security taxes. The Senate had approved a similar provision last year but -it never became law. To qualify for the exemption, a person would have to belong to a religious sect which teaches that it's wrong to participate in public or private insurance plans.1
