Abstract

The recently reported association between insulin resistance and elevated plasma homocyst(e)ine may reflect the fact that hyperinsulinemia suppresses hepatocyte expression of cystathionine beta-synthase, as demonstrated in rats. Thus, other measures which enhance diurnal insulin secretion – such as a high-glycemic-index diet – can be expected to increase homocysteine levels.
