Abstract

Three lines of evidence indicate that the ventromedial hypothalamus mediates feeding adjustments in response to varying metabolic states: (1) Daily injections of protamine zinc insulin do not increase food intake as much in VMH lesioned rats as in unlesioned rats. (2) Injections of glucose into the VMH, but not the lateral hypothalamus, depress daily food intake. (3) VMH lesions attenuate the vigor of eating after deprivation in diabetic rats.
