Abstract

The effectiveness of phytochemicals such as curcumin and resveratrol in promoting cell death in various cancer cell lines has been well established in the literature. Given the increased incidence of type II diabetes mellitus and associated insulin therapy for insulin resistance in the United States, our goal was to determine whether insulin treatment would abrogate the cytotoxic effects of curcumin and resveratrol in a melanoma cell line. Cell death was measured using a trypan blue dye exclusion assay while increased caspase activity was qualitatively measured using a Caspase 3/7 Green ReadyProbe. Although both resveratrol and curcumin treatments significantly increased cell death, insulin treatment did not significantly affect cell death in either treatment group. Therefore, insulin therapy is not expected to interfere with curcumin or resveratrol in patients choosing homeopathic options.
