McDANIEL THE AUTHOR: graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering in 1961. He was commissioned an ensign in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve in 1962 and was assigned to the Merchant Marine Technical Division at Coast Guard Headquarters. In 1965 he was released from active duty and is now employed by the Merchant Marine Technical Division in a civilian capacity. He is a member of the National Fire Protection Association, an Associate Member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and has served on the U. S. delegation to the Inter-governmental Maritime Consultative Organization working group on fire test procedures.
