Abstract

Insular populations of Microtus pennsylvanicus from the Magdalen Islands, Quebec, and Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, are compared with mainland populations and described as new subspecies. Microtus pennsylvanicus shattucki is removed from synonymy of M. p. pennsylvanicus and is redescribed. It is postulated that mainland and insular populations were derived from a coastal refugium composed of an emergent continental shelf exposed by isostatic crustal uplift and lowering of sea level.
