Abstract

Thirty-five measurements made of the α-β transformation on the quartz samples from the Ohaaki-Broadlands geothermal field and a reference Ceylonese ‘rock crystal’ gave values ranging from 569.6 to 572.4°C. Rigorous standardization of measurement conditions, however, gave reproducible results and a precision of ± 0.35°C. The instrumental factors and sample characteristics which affected the quartz inversion temperatures include packing density, grain size, and particle size, plus other factors not identified.
