Abstract

The paper describes an instrument capable of measuring the elastic hysteresis of a rod specimen in torsion under static conditions, when the hysteresis strain is only a few parts in 104 of the maximum strain. An interferometric strain gauge is employed with specimens approximately 9 in. long × 1/8 in. diameter.
