Abstract

This paper discusses the usefulness and challenges of Action Research in generating rigorous knowledge while solving relevant and real problems in organizations. The paper emphasizes the importance of instituting learning mechanisms in Action Research to ensure useful and valuable data collection and sustainable changes after an Action Research project completion. By presenting two action learning cases at the companies LEGO and VELUX, the paper demonstrates how action learning can enable the institution of learning mechanisms, generating data, and creating a supportive learning environment that fosters continuous improvement and innovation with Action Research. Hence, the paper provides insights into how researchers can institute learning mechanisms through action learning interventions to guide and help them conduct relevant and rigorous action research. Overall, this paper highlights the benefits of Action Research in solving real problems in organizations and generating theoretical knowledge, as well as the importance of learning mechanisms in ensuring the effectiveness and sustainability of Action Research projects through action learning.
