INSTITUTE OF BREWING HOP TRIALS: 1954 CROP

Abstract

Considering this year's results in conjunction with those of previous seasons, D3 appears to be a satisfactory hop for replacing at least 25% of the normal hop grist and, although its dry hopping qualities should not be emphasized, it has found favour in this respect with most of the brewers who have tested it. DI, which showed high promise in the small-scale trial from the 1952 crop, has not been quite so readily acceptable in this season's trials but, nevertheless, it is a promising variety. J2 also shows promise and is acceptable, up to at least 25% replacement, by the five brewers who have tested it this season. In previous trials OT48 has not appeared to be as acceptable as the above-mentioned varieties, possibly on account of its slight American aroma, but in this year's trial, which was on a smaller scale than usual, it appears to be more acceptable. V94, which was previously tested in 1951, does not appear to be a variety which brewers are likely to accept and there is little doubt that C2 would be unacceptable as a replacement for Fuggles by most brewers.
