Abstract
In 1982 our solid state physics community enjoyed the pre-Christmas hospitality of Bedford College, London, for its annual conference. These meetings, long remembered for Manchester in January, will now be recalled for the decorated salmon at the opening buffet and the mulled wine and mince pies which ended the conference.
