Abstract
The Institute of Maternal and Child Health (IMCH) of the Philippines set up a telephone hotline with trained counselors to answer family planning questions. At present 4 persons answer the phones and the service costs 34+a per call. The name of the service is Sagot sa Family Planning its most effective promotion has been a series of newspaper advertisements and feedback from IMCH clinics shows many of the callers follow through on suggestions that they go to the clinic for help. 25% of the callers are housewives and women outnumber men. The younger the caller the more likely he or she is to ask about the pill. The older the caller the greater the interest in sterilization when the method is mentioned by the counselor. Different occupational groups differed in contraceptive methods in which they were interested. Unmarried callers were more likely to ask questions unrelated to family planning; older callers and married ones were more interested in side effects and had more fears and misconceptions. Instant Sagot was modeled after Taiwan and Seoul South Korea telephone services. A detailed description of the operation is given.
