Abstract

Secondary carbon fibers, instantly grown on a matrix carbon fiber, were obtained by floating chemical vapor deposition using heavy oil residue as carbon source and ferrocene as catalyst precursor in an argon flow. The products were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The results show that intertwist and hollow carbon fibers with diameters of about 500 nm were in-situ and their growth oriented on a straight carbon fiber with diameter of about 10 μm. The growth mechanism was also discussed briefly.
