Abstract

A new scanning proton microprobe has been installed at the 5MV Van de Graaff accelerator of the KFKI Research Institute for Particle and Nuclear Physics. It is the energy-upgraded version of the Hamburg proton microprobe dismantled in 2001. The probe forming system includes a pair of focusing quadrupoles and an additional quadrupole pair in front of it, which is applied to increase the proton beam divergence. The average probe size at 2.5MeV proton energy is 2.2μm×1.1μm. The test results on stability and the preliminary experiments on cement corrosion and fish otoliths are also presented.
