Abstract
Multimodal literacy is an essential literacy skill for university students. It is required for multimodality to interpret the semiotic mode in making meaning. The representation of semiotic modes such as color, visual, graphic, gestures, spatial, etc., provides input for multimodal literacy development. Regarding the development of technology in ELT, the integration of technology shifts the paradigm that multimodal text is better than printed text. Thus, the involvement of digital multimodal text in social media like Instagram is undeniable. Digital images and video and text as the excellent features of Instagram provide a chance for developing students’ multimodal literacy in writing narrative text. The wealth of semiotic resources is presented in the digital images that provide an excellent narrative writing source. In creating the multimodal text being posted on Instagram and to critically view multimodal texts, students need to understand how meanings are generated from modes and be able to identify textual evidence to support the understanding of multimodality in the text.
