Abstract
We analyze the failure strength of loaded structures of the fractal-tree type, from a probabilistic perspective. The consideration of the intrinsic fragilities of the basic elements at each level of the tree makes the tree differ from being equivalent to a mere hierarchically organized bundle of fibers. A simple criterion for having a linear proportionality between the size of the tree and the inverse of the threshold strength for failure is found.
