Abstract
A simple calculation shows that plane Couette flow in a rotating inviscid neutrally buoyant fluid is unstable to roll perturbations. The linear shear flow may exist in nature as a boundary layer flow or a thermal wind. The results of the calculations are compared with observations of wind streaks on the ocean and cloud streets in the atmosphere.
