Abstract

The finite range of the nuclear forces can be taken into account in the macroscopic part of the nuclear binding energy by using a model based on the double folding of a Yukawa-plus-exponential function. These models have however the undesirable property to be unstable against higher-order multipole deformations, and unphysical shapes are obtained from a free optimization with too high multipolarites included. In this paper the instability is discussed, and limits on multipolarity are given as functions of mass number for the finite-range liquid drop model and the finite-range droplet model.
