Abstract

ABSTRACT An elevator failed unexpectedly while drilling a critical deep sour gas well. The elevator failed by brittle fracture. After reviewing industry practice, we decided that the minimum standards provided by API on hoisting equipment were inadequate for a few critical wells. This realization prompted us to develop a complete rig hoisting equipment inspection/ certification program for critical wells. On implementing the program, we found that basic materials certification was not routinely available and detailed component inspections were not routinely done on any hoisting equipment. This paper presents our inspection and certification requirements and thè results of several jobs.
