Abstract

Insomnia and sleep disorders represent health and social burden of developed countries. Percentage of burdened population varies from 23% in Japan, 31% in EU up to 56% in the USA. Social risk factors for insomnia are aging of population, awareness about personal illness, unemployment, and stress as a key factor. Personal consequences of insomnia include, first of all, psychological disturbances, than immunity break down, metabolic disturbances and cardiovascular diseases. Serbia is on the third place in Europe (after Russia and Ukraine) by the burden of cardiovascular diseases (410/100000 Europe, 504/100000 Serbia).By the circumstances that social ambient on one side and prevalence and dominance of cardiovascular diseases on the other side comprise, it is evident that insomnia represents unrecognized mortality risk factor in Serbia. Insomnia as the risk factor for cerebrocardiovascular diseases is neglected contributory factor to the development of these diseases in Serbia. The aim of this analytical research is to point on and mobilize action on this problem.
