Abstract
The U.S. managed trade policy has become increasingly controversial. In this paper, I investigate the determinants of trade remedy protection for the steel industry. A time series analysis suggests that protection is determined by both conventional economic factors and political economy factors. The empirical results offer a better insight into the origins of protective trade legislation under the U.S. trade remedy laws and have important implications for U.S. trade policy.
