The author discusses the political and legal landscape surrounding marriage equality debates in his home state of Hawaii. He explains the circumstances surrounding Hawaii becoming the first state to legally recognize same-sex couples, the heartbreaking years of backsliding, and a renewed sense of optimism with the passage of a civil unions bill. The future of marriage in Hawaii is discussed, and the author concludes with thoughts on same-sex marriage and mental health.
