Abstract

In this work, we synthesized a novel mono-atomically dispersed Fe-based catalyst supported on graphitic carbon nitride through a nimble, green and low-priced coordination-precipitation method. Under optimization conditions, a 98% yield of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was obtained from the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) or the two-step conversion of fructose. We unveiled that the Fe3+ species and lattice oxygen of FeNx@C catalyst played a vital role in HMF oxidation via the redox pair of Fe2+ and Fe3+ facilitated by oxygen. The oxygen transfer during HMF oxidation was realized over FeNx@C catalyst through the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. The recyclability of FeNx@C was then investigated and there was no significantly activity decrease after three catalytic runs. Moreover, FeNx@C was also applied in the high efficiency oxidation of various aliphatic and aromatic alcohols, which greatly broadened the scope of this catalyst.
