Abstract

Italian security professional, Andrea Pasquinucci, estimates spammers could make up to US$1000 per email blast if they persuade 0.1% of recipients to make a transaction. Therefore, it is no surprise that spammers continue to come up with more ingenious ways to get into our inboxes. This month, Pasquinucci describes how spammers think and what a successful unsolicited commercial email (UCE) operation means to them. He analyzes the three key players in a spam operation: the vendor, the UCE professional, and the UCE deliverer. The UCE professional prepares the message and selects the recipients; he wants to avoid contacting computer owners on email addresses managed by ISPs Andrea Pasquinucci dissects how spammers really think. What are their hopes and fears? And why do they get away with polluting our email?
