Abstract

The proscenium arch was a ghostly presence behind two new plays debuted in outdoor stagings this past August at Toronto’s Summerworks festival. Both Child Hood, written by festival veteran Bobby Del Rio and directed by Hume Baugh, and Downtown, a collective creation by the Question Company under the stewardship of Julia Gray, reproduced the sight-lines and spectatorial positions of a conventional auditorium in their otherwise well-selected performance venues, thereby severely curtailing each site’s theatrical possibilities. As a consequence, neither production was able to offer a compelling argument for the integrality of its performance environment to the overall fabric of the piece.
