Abstract

A nanoscale junction , that allows the measurement of the conductivity of a single molecule along different directions was devised as described by E. Borguet et al. in their Research Article on page 14275 ff. The conductance of the planar molecule trimesic acid is about 400 times higher when it lies flat on the surface than when it stands upright, as confirmed by calculations. By controlling the orientation of the molecule through the electrode potential, this system becomes a reversible electromechanical switch that can be toggled between OFF and ON states.
