Abstract

The morphinan alkaloids , especially codeine and morphine, are derived from the opium poppy and have been used for millennia for pain management. They remain vital medicines today, but climate change and geopolitical uncertainties threaten existing supply chains. In their Communication (e202203186), Martin G. Banwell, Ping Lan, and co-workers detail by far the shortest synthesis of (−)-codeine reported to date, which involves a total “in-flask” time of less than 24 hours.
