Abstract

Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are ideal central venous catheters (CVCs) for short‐to medium‐term administration of total parenteral nutrition. PICCs offer a variety of insertion techniques to fit the preference or experience base of the clinician placing the catheter. There are five primary methods of inserting PICC lines: use of a break‐away needle; use of an over‐the‐needle, peel‐away sheath; insertion through a standard IV cannula; or use of a modified or full Seldinger technique. The clinician's actual choice of catheter brand may well be influenced by the insertion options made available by the catheter manufacturer. This article briefly discusses advantages and disadvantages of currently available insertion techniques.
