Abstract

Intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUCD) have been used throughout the world for more than three decades. The highest prevalence of IUCD use is in Russia and China (33%). The use is low in England and Wales (5%) and USA (<2%). In sub-Saharan Africa levels are generally the lowest in the world. Recurrent scientific evidence showed that the IUCD is highly effective safe convenient cheaper and low maintenance method of contraception. The most widely used contraceptive method amongst post-partum women all over the world and in particular the South African public sector is the progestogen injectable. It is used by 49% of women immediately after delivery. IUCDs are the popular method of postpartum contraceptive in Mexico China and Egypt. Most of insertions of IUCDs in women who have recently given birth is after six weeks. Postpartum IUCD insertion began in 1960 but was followed by mixed success rate which was influenced by a variety of factors such as timing of insertion counselling provider training and programmatic support. Term delivery provides an ideal opportunity to address the need for contraception especially with women with limited access to medical care. In South Africa and other developing countries were health care facilities are limited the concept of IUCD insertion post-partum is appealing in areas were patients find it difficult to visit health facilities.
