Abstract
The hollandite-type structure of K x Ru 8O 16 ( x ≈ 2) was determined from 609 single crystal intensities to R = 0.026. Pure powder samples were obtained for x ≈ 1.5. Conductivity measurements show metallic behaviour. Lithium was inserted at room temperature both chemically and electrochemically. The electrochemical intercalation was realized in the cell Li LiClO 4 in propylene carbonate/K x Ru 8O 16; about 0.5–0.6 lithium atoms were intercalated per ruthenium atom without significant change in the X-ray diffraction pattern.
