Abstract
Bacillus thuringiensis strain EG4961 was isolated from grain dust. This strain produces a parasporal inclusion body composed of a unique 74.4-kdal insecticidal crystal protein. This protein is toxic to larvae and adults of several Coleopteran species including Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), and southern corn rootworm, Diabrotica undecimpunctata howardi Barber, a species that is relatively unaffected by the previously described CryIIIA insecticidal crystal protein. The discovery of EG4961 provides for the possibility of microbial-based control strategies for Diabrotica spp. and other Coleoptera.
