Abstract

Tests were conducted in Hawaii during 1964 and 1965 on the transmission of corn mosaic by the corn planthopper, Peregrinus maidis (Ashmead); the corn leaf aphid, Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch); and the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer). In these tests it was shown that the corn planthopper can acquire the virus from infected corn in an acquisition feeding as short as 4 hours. There is a latent period in the vector of 14–31 days and the virus can be transmitted by a viruliferous planthopper to a susceptible plant in a feeding time as short as 15 minutes. More transmissions of virus occurred during the light hours of the day than during the dark hours. The virus was not transmitted by the corn leaf aphid, but in 1 experiment 4 transmissions were effected by the green peach aphid. This latter experiment could not be duplicated.
