Abstract

Insects are exceedingly diverse, including more species than all other animal groups combined. The burden of this essay is that, in spite of the wondrous variation in external body form, the central nervous systems of insects are remarkably conservative, varying astonishingly little from the most primitive to the most advanced of the extant groups. Instead of evolutionary variation commensurate with that of the body, we see tinkering with the connections formed by a largely conserved set of neurons.
