Abstract

This chapter discusses insect microbiology. Insects are subject to attack by microorganisms, and widespread epizootics frequently terminate a dangerous outbreak that threatens extensive destruction. The microorganisms that attack insects include bacteria, fungi, protozoa, rickettsia, viruses, and nematodes. Applied insect pathology is only one phase of insect microbiology. Research efforts at a high level in more basic aspects are dependent on a continuing and growing interest. This is nearly inescapable because of the great variety and number of insect species that in one way or another cause injury. A great deal of basic facts pertaining to the biology of both the microorganisms and their hosts must be established before maximum use can be made of any of them.
