Abstract

Abstract : Presented is a comparison in free space of input impedance and radiation efficiency characteristics of two types of radiating structures which have been proposed for use as airborne VLF antennas: Namely, the single ''trailing-wire antenna'' and the side-loaded ''transmission-line antenna.'' From the theory of side-loaded transmission-line antennas derived by R. W. Kulterman, input impedance, radiation efficiency, and side-loaded voltage drops are calculated for examples of three types of transmission-line antennas. Some general comparisons are made between the efficiency and impedance characteristics of training-wire antennas and transmission-line antennas. Some advantages and disadvantages of both types of antennas are given.
