Abstract

Continuous in-process monitoring is the key to zero-defect production in the automated factory of the future. Yet it depends entirely on suitable sensors. Piezoelectric sensors have proven to be extremely well suited because of their reliability, inherent stability, high sensitivity, uniquely wide dynamic range, wide frequency response, high rigidity, small size, ruggedness, easy mounting and complete safety against overload. Sensors for force (single- and multicomponent), strain, pressure and vibration are already well introduced. New, unique acoustic emission sensors not only complete the present range of sensors, but open up entirely new horizons in detecting flaws and incipient failure in mass-produced parts. For the first time, a Dual-Mode-Sensor combines AE- and 3-component force-measurement in one single, compact sensor.
