Abstract

We report a rare case of stenotic double-orifice mitral valve of incomplete bridge-type in a 40 year-old female. Transthoracic two-dimensional echocardiography revealed a double-orifice . mitral valve at the leaflet level, with anterolateral and posteromedial orifices which measured 0.6 and 1.1 cm2 by planimetry, respectively. Color Doppler examination showed separate diastolic flows and trivial regurgitation through each orifice. The fibrous bridge tissue between the leaflets was successfully split using percutaneous Inoue-balloon valvuloplasty with stepwise dilations applied only to the posteromedial orifice. The mitral valve area after the procedure measured 3.0 cm2, Transesophageal echocardiograms with three-dimensional reconstruction also confirmed the presence of a double-orifice mitral valve before and an enlarged single mitral orifice after the valvuloplasty( Mid Taiwan J Med 2002;7:59-64)
