Abstract

We report the effect of inorganic impurities on the photoinduced hydrophilic conversion on ultrasmooth SrTiO3 and TiO2 single crystal surfaces. A water droplet became well spread over on a TiO2-terminated SrTiO3(100) surface after UV irradiation, whereas it remained beaded on a SrO-terminated SrTiO3(100) surfaces. ZnO and CuO impurities deposited onto a rutile TiO2(110) surfaces were found to suppress the hydrophilic conversion with increasing amounts of ZnO and CuO. No hydrophilicity characteristic of TiO2 was observed after UV irradiation at a nominal impurity thickness of only 5 Å, indicating that the surface-exposed atomic layer plays a crucial role in photoinduced hydrophilic conversion.
