Abstract

The impulses of information technology applications are nowadays manifested by the changes and innovations in a wide range of human activities, not excluding the urban design profession. Urban design is the process of creation of the aesthetic, social and environmental sustainable habitat. It is a multidisciplinary process that is specified by the planning, negotiations, communication with the stakeholders in the urban areas and looking for the consensus. The publication focuses on the technologies supporting digital creation and communication professionally related to architecture and urbanism. It explores the possibilities of actual geographical information technologies and spatial data infrastructures and how can they enhance the potential of effective urban design and participatory planning methods. Such approaches encompass significant asset to ecological approaches in urban design so as they can, if properly designed and coordinated, enhance the accessibility of actual and complex spatial information and the new communication methods. The experiences from Slovakia and European research networks on urban design are presented.
