Abstract

Problem-based learning (PBL) pedagogy was implemented into the mechanical engineering postgraduate curriculum to train their self-directed learning and innovation designing ability. Then a new PBL pedagogy process was built up for mechanical engineering postgraduate that used in the School of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Northeast Petroleum University. The faculty and PBL teams cooperated with the oil company's engineers to resolve the problem low yield well for improving the pump efficiency and running time. At last, the oil company adopted one of the PBL teams' new small displacement reciprocating pump to use in the Daqing oil field and achieved a very well results. In the PBL pedagogy process, the faculty and facilitators resolved three contradictory questions that improves the PBL application area and builds up a set of teaching curriculum for postgraduate. Meanwhile, the mechanical engineering postgraduate students improved their self-directed learning ability, critical thinking ability, cooperative learning ability and innovation design ability.
