Abstract
In order to generate a more real istic and up–to–date approach to residential design, an interior design educator and environmental design researcher teamed up to teach a senior level residential design class. This course emphasized innovative departures from previous teaching practice. Content innovations included energy conscious design, spec–built rather than custom designed housing, and multi–family residential design. Innovative teaching approaches included role playing by students as members of design development teams, preparation of programming documents by students who analyzed behavioral aspects and activity patterns in response to environmental factors, and project review by staff of a design development firm in the process of building a multi–family passive solar development.
