Abstract

The authors walk the reader through the innovative and turbulent journey of designing and implementing a learner-centric experiential entrepreneurship degree at Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) in the United States. The inspiration for this program came from an observed need to reinvent higher education and for SNHU to become a catalyst for changing entrepreneurship education. This learning journey was catapulted by observing trends within higher education and the ways in which learners engage. If higher education is to thrive, it needs to change. Hence, the reason for researching and exploring other Entrepreneurial Degree programmes around the world. The Team Academy model distinguished itself for its success and adaptability in many different countries and cultures. Since SNHU is known for its innovative culture, launching an entrepreneurship program that embraces learning by doing, failing forward, and faculty-led coaching as its prime principles seemed suitable. The outcome was the inception of the team-based experiential academic model (t.e.a.m.) which can be used as the foundation for several degrees delivered at SNHU in the future. The authors were inspired to document the journey using the Innovation DiceTM, one of the innovation tools introduced by Andre Bolland. The Innovation DiceTM was primarily used for explaining the process of developing t.e.a.m. while following the six phases of identify, insight, inspire, ideate, impact, and innovation. The framework incorporated commonalities of various models highlighted in the literature review and aligned with the natural process that emerged while designing the new degree programme at SNHU. The innovation process is further outlined by providing specific examples and challenges experienced during this journey. Strategic networking and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders became the key ingredients to minimize resistance. “Innovation within the lines” addresses the balance between systems, regulations, and the desire to be entrepreneurial.
